Day 1 :Exploring the Golden Fort and City Charm

  • Start your Jaisalmer adventure by visiting the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort. It’s best to go in the afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds. This living fort is truly remarkable, with thousands of people still residing within its ancient walls.

    Jaisalmer Fort: A Living Heritage

The fort is open 24/7, allowing you to explore its ramparts at any time. However, the specific monuments inside have visiting hours from 8 AM to 5:30 PM. You can ride your two-wheeler up to Dashera Chowk. If you’re in a car, you’ll need to park at the base and walk up.

Inside the fort, don’t miss the Jain Temple, which has an entry fee. Photography inside might also incur extra charges. The Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum, which includes the Maharaja Palace and Queen’s Palace, is also a must-see. The entry fee is ₹100 per person, payable in cash.

The palace offers a glimpse into royal life, with displays of the Maharaja’s court and personal belongings. It’s a very photogenic spot. After exploring the palace, head to the fort’s wash tower for a view of old cannons and the Golden City. The fort also has a market area and rooftop restaurants, making it a place you can easily spend three to four hours.

Kothari Patwon Ki Haveli: Architectural Marvel

Next, visit Kothari Patwon Ki Haveli, a stunning example of Rajput architecture. Inside, there’s a museum that you can explore for an entry fee of ₹100. The intricate carvings and detailed designs are truly breathtaking. You can also admire the haveli’s exterior for free.

Salam Singh Ki Haveli: Another Architectural Gem

Another beautiful haveli worth visiting is Salam Singh Ki Haveli. Its unique architecture and historical significance make it a fascinating stop. Take your time to appreciate the craftsmanship.

    Gadsar Lake: Lakeside Serenity

Gadsar Lake is a lovely spot located in the heart of the city. It’s best to walk or take an auto-rickshaw to reach it. The area around the lake is filled with shops where you can browse and grab a snack. There’s a dedicated lake view point, and you can also enjoy boating.

In the evening, consider experiencing the light and sound show, usually held around 6:00 or 6:30 PM. It adds a magical touch to your visit.

    Bada Bagh: Royal Gardens

For a beautiful sunset view, head to Bada Bagh. There’s a small entry fee of ₹100. This historical garden complex features several cenotaphs, known as samadhis or smoraks, dedicated to the royal family of Jaisalmer.

Day 2: Thrills of the Thar Desert Safari

The highlight of any Jaisalmer trip is the desert safari. This experience is best enjoyed between October and March. You have two main choices for sand dunes: the famous Sam Sand Dunes or the slightly less crowded Khuri Sand Dunes.

Desert Safari Packages: Inclusions and Types

You don’t need to book your safari far in advance. You can easily book it on the spot when you arrive. Many hotels can also help you arrange a safari package. There are generally two types of safaris available.

The normal safari typically includes a stay in tents. It costs around ₹3000 per person. This price usually covers transport from your hotel, camel rides, jeep safaris, meals, and a cultural dance show. The adventure desert safari offers a unique experience of sleeping under the stars on open beds. This package starts from about ₹2500 per person and includes similar activities, minus the tent stay.

Safaris usually run from 3 PM one day until 11 AM the next day. Many safaris also offer optional paid activities at the desert camp. The camel ride, often lasting two hours, is a memorable experience. Enjoying the cultural folk dance show around a large bonfire is also a highlight.

Essential Safari Tips

When booking your safari, always ask which sand dunes you’ll be visiting. Sam Sand Dunes are more popular and can be more expensive. You can often get better deals by comparing prices from different vendors on the spot.

If you’re traveling during winter, be sure to pack warm clothing. The desert nights can get quite chilly. Also, inquire if the Kuldhara Village, an abandoned haunted village, is included in your safari package.

Day 3: Borders, Miracles, and Haunted Villages

Your third day can be dedicated to exploring sites beyond the immediate city. You can drive your own vehicle or hire a taxi for these excursions. Some desert safari packages might even include these locations.

Kuldhara Village: The Haunted Hamlet

Kuldhara Village is an intriguing abandoned settlement located about 30 minutes from Jaisalmer. Parking for two-wheelers costs around ₹30, and there’s an entry fee for those with passes. The village is famous for its haunting stories, and entry after 6 PM is prohibited.

Longewala Border: A Historical Battlefield

Visit the Longewala Border, a significant site from the 1971 India-Pakistan War. This location inspired the Bollywood movie “Border.” You can explore a museum and a war memorial here. The war zone, known as Yuddha Sthal, allows you to see actual trenches, tanks, and aircraft from the conflict. It’s a powerful place to learn about India’s military history.

Tanot Mata Mandir: The Miraculous Temple

Nearby is the Tanot Mata Mandir, considered a miraculous temple. During the 1965 war, Pakistan dropped thousands of bombs in the area, but remarkably, none exploded near the temple. You can still see some of these unexploded bombs displayed within the temple complex.

India-Pakistan Border Viewpoint

You can also visit an actual viewpoint of the India-Pakistan border. To do this, you’ll need a permit, which requires your Aadhaar card. Only four-wheelers are allowed to go all the way. If you arrive by two-wheeler, a local union offers taxi services to the border for a fee of ₹100-₹200.

Jaisalmer Food Guide: Culinary Delights

No trip to Jaisalmer is complete without trying its local food specialties. You must sample the famous Mirchi Vada and Pyaz Kachori; they are easily available throughout the city. Many restaurants offer delicious pure vegetarian meals.

For non-vegetarian options, the Laal Maas, a rich mutton curry, is highly recommended. Don’t forget to try the local sweets, especially Ghevar and Malai Ghevar, which are absolute delights. Many hotels have rooftop restaurants where you can enjoy your meals with a stunning view of the Golden City.

Note: This itinerary can be customized to suit your travel preferences and schedule.

Car with Driver Packages: Guided Exploration

If you prefer not to drive yourself, car rentals with professional drivers are an excellent and convenient option for exploring the region without the stress of navigating or parking. This way, you can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights while a knowledgeable driver takes care of the route and timing. A full city tour in Jaisalmer or Jodhpur with a driver typically costs around ₹2000 for the day, giving you enough time to visit major attractions, enjoy local food stops, and shop in the bustling markets at your own pace.

If you plan to extend your itinerary to include the magical sand dunes of Sam or Khuri in addition to the city tour, you can expect to pay about ₹3000 for the day. This price often includes pick-up from your hotel, transport to the dunes, time for camel or jeep safari experiences, and a return trip in the evening. It’s a fantastic option if you want to witness the sunset over the golden sands and still return to your accommodation the same night.

For those seeking a more immersive travel experience, a two-day package with a driver is highly recommended. Such a package usually includes full-day sightseeing, travel to the desert, cultural activities, and an overnight stay in a desert camp or hotel. Prices for this can be around ₹7000, depending on the type of accommodation chosen—whether standard tents, luxury Swiss tents, or hotel rooms. This allows you to soak in the night-time charm of the desert, enjoy cultural performances under the stars, and wake up to a peaceful sunrise in the dunes.

Remember, these prices are approximate estimates and can vary significantly depending on factors such as the day of the week, tourist season, type of vehicle, fuel costs, and the level of luxury or customization you choose. During peak tourist months, prices can be slightly higher, while in off-season periods, you might find good deals and discounts. Always confirm the exact cost directly with your chosen rental provider to avoid misunderstandings and ensure that the package includes everything you expect—such as driver charges, fuel costs, parking fees, and any additional entry tickets for attractions.
